Geoff Pearson

Captain

A Q&A with your 2020 Captain!

When did you join Greenisland Golf Club?

1984

What attracted you to join Greenisland GC?

My grandfather had introduced me to golf before we moved to Greenisland so joining was the obvious thing to do when we moved to the area.

Can you remember your handicap when you joined?

28

What is your handicap now?

4

Have you seen much change with the course or the club during your time here?

When i joined there wasn't a lot of trees as these were planted in the 1980's. They have now matured the course and although short by modern standards it requires accuracy over length.

What is your favourite hole on the course and why?

Statistically the 3rd but the 19th would be my favourite.

What is your least favourite hole on the course and why?

I always have problems playing the 6th, probably make 4 more often than 3!

If you could make once change to a hole what would it be?

I would remove "Cecil's" tree to the right of the 3rd fairway as it is like a magnet off the tee or flatten out the first!

What is your favourite course played?

I have to say in Ireland definitely Royal Portrush but the PGA Catalunya would be my favourite on mainland Europe.

What is your favourite club in your bag?

Anyone who plays with me will know the answer to that one - Driver!

Have you ever had a hole in one?

One in a Wednesday night sweep years ago so doesn't really count!

Who is your best memory in playing golf?

Greenisland punches above it's weight on the course and i have been privileged to be involved in some of our success stories over the years.

Who is your favourite pro golfer and why?

I dont really have a favourite but support all the local guys when they are in contention.

Who would be your ideal four ball?

Wayne "Radar" Riley, Rory McIlroy, Alex Ferguson and myself!

Finally, what are you most looking forward to in your year of captaincy?

I have always been proud to represent Greenisland on the course and now as Captain I am looking forward to ensuring the club moves forward in these difficult times for clubs in general.

Irene Pritchard

Lady Captain

A Q&A with your 2019 Lady Captain

When did you join Greenisland Golf Club?

1997

What attracted you to join Greenisland GC?

When we relocated to Greenisland and were within walking distance of the Club, I thought it would be interesting to try golf as a sport new to me.

Can you remember your handicap when you joined?

36

What is your handicap now?

29

Have you seen much change with the course or the club during your time here?

The course has improved and matured year on year; a new penalty area at the 9/18th holes and new signage are the latest enhancements.    I really appreciate the procurement of buggies for the Club as it allows me to continue playing golf in Greenisland.   Internal alterations and décor have helped the ambience and encouraged social events.  The introduction of technology has improved the administration of competitions and communication with members.

What is your favourite hole on the course and why?

The 3rd.  I have had some good scores here.

What is your least favourite hole on the course and why?

 I find the 5th a very challenging par 4.

If you could make one change to a hole what would it be?

At the eighth I would improve the pathways, both up behind the green and coming down from it towards the next tee box.

What is your favourite club in your bag?

7 iron.

Have you ever had a hole in one?

No, it’s still on my wish list.

Who is your favourite pro golfer and why?

Rory as the local boy and Seve Ballesteros who could execute the most brilliant shots.

What is the best course you have played?

Portstewart for it’s impressive views but the views from the top of the hill in Greenisland aren’t too shabby.

Who is in your ideal fourball?

James Nesbitt and…..he can choose the others.

Whats your favourite tipple?

G&T

Do you have any pets?

Not any more.

What is your proudest golfing moment?

Winning the Victory Cup in my rookie year.  Also, winning the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Goblet in the 2002 Golden Jubilee Year.

What is your vision for Greenisland GC?

My vision involves our Club embracing the future and being a modern, fit for purpose club.  I hope we will continue to attract new members who will feel we are friendly, welcoming and inclusive.
